HIGHLIGHTER

Highlighting is essentially adding lights to the face. Highlighters may come in either powder or cream base. Regardless of texture, the shade of the highlighter should be two to three shades lighter than the shade of the skin.

The ideal places to highlight are underneath the arch of the brow, in the inner corner of the eyes, the bridge of the nose just between the eyes, on the high points of the cheeks, and right above the lips at the Cupid’s bow,” says makeup artist Stella Kae, who has worked on celebs like Alyssa Milano, Brandi Cyrus and Toni Braxton. For a more natural look with light or neutral eyeshadow shades, she recommends highlighting just at the centre of the eyelid. Just don’t forget to tap your brush on to tissue or the back of your hand first to take off any excess product!

Always along the bone structure. Generally, start on the protruding areas of the face and blend well.

The easiest way to find the protruding area of face is to stand facing the window and observe the face with natural light falling on it. The part of the face that reflects light most is the place you want to place highlight on. Besides applying a teeny bit of highlighter on the forehead to look glowy IRL, Mario Dedivanovic, KKW’s BFF and makeup guru, also recommends applying a small amount to the corner of your chin, instead of the centre. This means that when you tilt your head your highlight will catch the light and appear like a natural glow.

Try to stay away from products that look glittery. It’s supposed to look like a pretty sheen, not a disco ball on the cheekbones!

Highlighting is a strong trend, but be careful to not go overboard. Strong shimmer can look very unnatural in daylight and under the wrong artificial lighting. Keep it light during the day, and feel free to add on at night, especially if you’re going somewhere with dim lighting.
